Tax Regimes & Planning at a Glance

Key figures for AY 2026-27 — current as of 25 August 2026. Regime rules change with each Finance Act; verify against incometax.gov.in before relying on these for a specific filing.

Choosing your regime
If you have no business or professional income, you can choose between the old and new tax regime afresh every year when you file — the choice made in one year does not lock you in for the next.
Default regime
The new tax regime is the default for AY 2026-27. If you want the old regime instead, you must actively opt for it while filing your return.
Tax-free income threshold
Under the new regime, the Section 87A rebate makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh effectively tax-free. Under the old regime, the rebate applies only up to ₹5 lakh of taxable income.
Deductions available
The old regime allows deductions such as Section 80C investments, HRA and home loan interest on a self-occupied property; the new regime does away with most of these in exchange for lower slab rates.
When to plan
Tax-saving investments and structuring decisions need to be in place before 31 March, the end of the financial year — waiting until you file your return in July leaves no room to act on most of them.
